Residential District Revisions
Fort Lauderdale, FloridaCode Studio, following the lead urban design firm Winter & Company, is working with the City of Fort Lauderdale to prepare revised residential districts that more accurately reflect the character of the city's neighborhoods. Many of the city's neighborhoods developed without maximizing the generous building envelope that still exists today, resulting in relatively low-scale single-family and multifamily buildings. More recently, these neighborhoods experienced significant redevelopment pressure, including a change in the type and size of housing. As a result, changes are occurring to the existing pattern of development. In response to these changes, the city has embarked on a project that will evaluate the regulations that address mass and scale in residentially-zoned areas.
Following a public urban design analysis process, a strategic plan for updating the city's unified land development regulations was prepared. This strategy is under consideration by the city -- next steps will include direction from the City Council, and then drafting the revisions for public consideration.
